Why Name Is Necessary For Every One?

Name gives us an identity, without name we are truly nobodies. There is certain magic which we associate with names. Consider the word Raam. It is associated with an avatar of Vishnu. We consider Mahatma Gandhi a truly liberated soul indeed because, in the very last breath of his life, even as he feels a victim to a foul bullet, he uttered the words “He Raam!” Try substituting some other word for ‘Raam’ Any word. The impact is just not the same. ‘He Raam’ says it all.

So words have meaning and names are words with special meaning attached to them. Even dogs and other animals respond to names. Perhaps they recognize only the sound of the word. But no matter, the sound is animated by life, and a name is life. Just imagine if we call rose by any other name would smell as sweet. No doubt it would. The premise may be true. But only the word ‘rose’ is evocative of a fragrance that belongs only to it.
